04:21 pm - I am alive
Yes indeed. I have a job, I hate my job, I want a new job. I am looking for a new job.

Does anyone want to look at a sales list full of GOish type books? They are really just looking for a new home. I need them out of my parents' house soonish.

I do not like Sarah Palin. I do not like John McCain anymore.

02:46 am - Book Meme
I am a copycat so I gacked this meme from approximately half my friendslist. It is the list of the BBC Top 100 books for the Big Read. For those not in the UK the point of The Big Read was to find Britain's most well-loved novel. Which explains it.

Bolded means I've read it
Italics means I mean to read it
Strikethrough means I'm not going to read it

05:35 pm - Meme and stuff
Gacked from various people: Heres a list of 150 things people have done in their lifetime, I've highlighted the things I've done already:

Today the dog was choking on a hanger. She was making the most awful noise. My dad was in the room but he was panicking. I had to hold her and pull the hanger out. That was quite scary. I am still a little shaken up.

Other random thing. Safina and I were supposed to celebrate New Year's Eve together with her fiancé and a couple of other people. She emailed me to tell me that she is sick so she couldn't go out. I emailed back sympathetic.

Now for the part about me being a freak. I didn't really want to go. I have most of season 2 and all of season 3 of "Gilmore Girls" to watch. BUT I have this horrible nagging feeling that she isn't actually sick she just told me she was. I hope I am wrong. But if you don't want to spend time with someone you shouldn't pretend you do.

I don't know. I am probably overthinking this.

12:24 am - Really random Harry Potter thought
So I'm rereading Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and I'm at the part where Mad-Eye Moody shows Harry the picture of the original Order. So my thought is, there is a secret organization out there fighting Lord Voldmort, who is winning the war at this point and you have a group photo taken? Really, a group photo? So that Lord Voldmort can get ahold of the picture and start systematically eliminating the members of the Order?

I guess JK Rowling was doing a touching Harry sees his parents moment but still.

02:43 am - Quiz fun

Which Fantasy/SciFi Character Are You?

A venerated sage with vast power and knowledge, you gently guide forces around you while serving as a champion of the light.

Judge me by my size, do you? And well you should not - for my ally is the Force. And a powerful ally it is. Life creates it, makes it grow. Its energy surrounds us, and binds us. Luminescent beings are we, not this crude matter! You must feel the Force around you, everywhere.

Yoda is a is a character in the Star Wars universe. More Yoda information is available at the Star Wars Databank.

"Inaccurate that is" exclaimed Yoda in disgust. Tee hee. Yoda. Cool I am. Talk like this I must.

05:14 am - Victoria Falls and Chobe
It’s been a really long time since my last update. I am sorry about that but some of you know I am alive as I do post occasionally on message boards. I am now Snarfblatt at BNABBT, just because.

So here it is below the cut because it is very long.

03:23 am - Lions and Tigers and Bears, oh my!
Well not really. Long time no update. I think it was Friday or so the last time I updated. On Friday night I was boring and stayed home. In retrospect I should have gone to the party but I really was tired so I didn’t. Saturday morning we were invited to a wedding but we didn’t exactly make it. We did make it over to a mall where we ate breakfast/lunch at a nice restaurant and had coffee. Afterwards we sort of browsed around the shops but didn’t buy anything although the sweaters were rather tempting. We also went to the National Museum and art gallery. The art was interesting and I took pictures. I will not even attempt to upload the pictures seeing as it took M three and a half hours to upload seven pictures. I can definitely wait until I get home. There was a great deal about the history of Botswana and twins are apparently ‘hot and unnatural’ objects. You read that here first.
Saturday evening we went out to dinner with some friends of Js. It was nice to talk to different people for a while.
Sunday was kind of a lazy day until the afternoon where we went on a game drive to Mokolodi game reserve which is very close to Gabs. We saw much in the way of different types of antelope. We also saw warthogs (so cute), ostriches (not cute) and the highlight was definitely the elephants. Elephants have very wrinkly butts in case you were wondering. It was very cool to be so close to them, even if it was a little nerve-wracking at times. We heard jackels but didn’t actually see them. We took the evening drive that ended up being very, very cold. Fortunately there were blankets.
Yesterday was another day at work but we got to leave early to go and to a play called “The Yellow Dress” it was about passion killings which are very common here. Passion killings are when a partner, usually a man, kills their partner after they break up with them. The play was very well done and I think it will have an impact on its targeted audiences. Then we ate KFC and M bought shoes for a waif.
We went home and vegged. Same old, same old.
This morning I met with the head of the office where we talked about what I am supposed to be doing. Now I am not doing as much work as I should be doing.

Oh and I have a crush on my male roommate. I hate it. I get all shy around him and can't say anything at all. I feel that it is unrequited.

10:21 am - update 2
So this has nothing whatsoever to do with Botswana but it does irritate me. Sir Christopher had said he would e-mail us our grades. Stupid me I thought that meant he would e-mail them to us privately. Nope, everyone knows what everyone else got. I am not impressed. Not even because I did that badly but just because why would he do that? Grades are supposed to be confidential.

Back to Botswana, the signing for Alexander McCall Smith was held at the British private school whose name I have forgotten.
I want to bring up the HIV/AIDS issue. There is a saying here ‘if you aren’t infected you are affected’. Botswana has the highest HIV/AIDS infection rate in the world. I am reading a book about a typical Batswana woman who is infected with HIV. It is heartbreaking. I was talking to one of the women in the office and her younger sister is HIV positive. She is trying to get her sister to take the necessary care but her sister doesn’t always care. It isn’t that I never thought about AIDS before it’s just that it is still considered a disease among marginalized communities in the US and Europe. AIDS is destroying this country. It is a shame since they were doing so well economically. You cannot even begin to understand the devastation unless you see it or read the stories. There is also a huge stigma attached to being HIV positive, couple this with teenagers who think it won’t happen to them and who have had so much AIDS education that they are sick of it and you have a disaster.

Part of me feels I should write my thesis on this but I don’t think I will, partly because there is already so much on it and also because I am not supposed to be writing a heartbreaking account of what goes on, I should be writing facts. I need to be objective.

I am still frustrated by my lack of permanent computer access at the office. How am I supposed to do research if I can’t access a computer? I will not spend time on any message boards though. Except if you send me a PM and I need to respond. Please don’t unless you have no other way to contact me though.

04:33 pm - Update from Botswana
Since I'm not sure everyone wants to read it and it's long I'm putting it under the cut.
In summary, UNICEF, giant cockroaches and Alexander McCall Smith are all contained within.
